Getting ready for spring sports

Find out what spring soccer is available for your child.

It is already time to think about what sports your kids will be playing in the spring. Luckily, there are many options in the Lowcountry. However, it is important not to miss the deadlines for registration. Check out the various municipalities and what they will offer this spring season for youth athletics. Here is information about the sports available, the deadlines for registration and what ages they accommodate.

City of Charleston: Register by Jan. 21 for baseball, softball, track, lacrosse and soccer. Age ranges start at 5 to 16 years old. Program options are located on Daniel Island, James Island, downtown Charleston and West Ashley. They also offer ABC Developmental Programs starting at age 4 in baseball, football, soccer and with learning basic skills like throwing and catching. Golf is also an option for youth sports through the city of Charleston.

St. Andrew's Parks and Playground: Located in West Ashley, St. Andrew’s Parks & Playground will have registration through Feb. 10. Early registration lasts until Jan. 22, regular registration lasts from Jan. 23 to Feb. 5 and late registration lasts from Feb. 6-10. There is a separate cost for residents within the St. Andrew’s PSD limits. They offer track, baseball, softball and volleyball. Age ranges from 4 to 18.

Charleston County Parks and Recreation: Offering various youth sports options throughout the year, including dance, karate and basketball, Charleston County Parks and Recreation offers their youth sports programs to the communities of Hollywood, Johns Island and McClellanville. Check the website for the various cutoff dates to register.

Youth baseball

Youth baseball is a popular sport in the spring and summer.

City of North Charleston: Offering baseball, softball and soccer, the city of North Charleston’s spring sports options start at age 4 to 16. Spring sports registration is throughout the month of January. Visit the city’s website for more information.

Town of Mount Pleasant: Registration is through Jan. 17 for spring sports through the Town of Mount Pleasant Recreation Department. They offer soccer and baseball. Check their site for the various registration dates throughout the year with different sport options. Ages start at 4 years old.

City of Goose Creek: Spring registration in Goose Creek is Jan. 9 to 31 for baseball, softball and soccer. Check their website for other sports throughout the year. Age ranges start at 4 and go up to age 19.

Town of Summerville: The Town of Summerville offers baseball, flag football and soccer in the spring Ages start at 3 years old and go up to age 14. Registration is throughout the month of January.

Barrier Islands Little League: Offering baseball and softball for ages 5 to 14, the Barrier Islands Little League serves the Johns Island and surrounding barrier island communities. Registration is ongoing until Jan. 31.

Town of Moncks Corner: Spring youth sports in Moncks Corner consists of baseball, softball, flag football and soccer. Age ranges are from 4 to 16. Registration is ongoing until Feb. 13.

City of Hanahan: Registration lasts until Feb. 20 for spring softball and baseball starting at age 7 to 15. Check out the other sports they have available throughout the year through their recreation department.

Soccer Shots: Soccer shots is a program that begins at age 2 to 8 and is taught in various locations throughout the Lowcountry, including many local schools and daycare centers. It teaches young children the fundamentals of soccer. Visit their website for a location near you.
