It's important to encourage an entrepreneurial mindset in your child from a very young age.

  • Take advantage of community events like Charleston STEM Festival each February and First Day Festival in August to introduce your child to career opportunities.
  • Encourage computer science classes. Even if your child isn’t interested in pursuing a career in IT or computer science, essentially every career will require at least some computer know-how.
  • Set up job shadowing opportunities or summer jobs/internships that give students a first-hand look at different industries and career opportunities. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a formal program. Ask family members or friends to host your older elementary or middle school child for a week over the summer.
  • Encourage an entrepreneurial mindset in your child. Ask her what problems she wants to solve versus what she wants to be when she grows up.
  • Enroll your child in a variety of extracurricular activities, clubs and summer camps. They have a chance to explore robotics, culinary arts, creative writing and engineering for a semester or a few weeks over the summer.
  • Keep an open mind. By exposing your child to a variety of options and ideas, they will be well suited for future careers – some of which don’t even exist today.
