AIKEN — Local businesses are rallying together to raise money for the family of an Aiken police officer killed in the line of duty.
The Aiken Standard reports (http://bit.ly/v0un7a ) that residents have lined up local merchants who will place collection jars in their businesses to raise donations for the family of Officer Scotty Richardson.
The jars will be up for about a month, and then money will be donated to a bank account established after Richardson was killed.
Allison Burbury, one of the people organizing the effort, says she wanted to do something to help the family.
Richardson died Dec. 21 after being shot in the head during a traffic stop. Police plan to charge a man currently in the hospital with Richardson’s death.
Richardson left behind a wife and three children.
