The S.C. Highway Patrol said U.S. Highway 17 south of Jacksonboro was re-opened to traffic as of 7 p.m.

A wreck (see below) had caused the road to be closed in both directions for about seven hours.

Earlier:

An overturned tractor-trailer on U.S. 17 in Colleton County has snarled traffic and the S.C. Highway Patrol is recommending alternate routes.

The collision occurred about noon near Pon Pon Plantation Road just south of Jacksonboro, said Lance Cpl. Bob Beres, a spokesman for the Highway Patrol.

If you’re traveling south on US-17:

Take Hwy-64 towards Walterboro, left on Ritter Road (SC-41), left on SC-303 then that will take you to US-17 south.

If you’re traveling north on US-17:

Take SC-303, right on Ritter Road (SC-41), right onto SC-64 and that will take you to US-17 north.

Beres said the truck overturned and there were no other vehicles involved. A passenger in the truck was taken to Medical University Hospital, but the driver was not injured, Beres said.

Troopers don't expect to be able to open the road to traffic until about 6 p.m., he said.
