LIVE TRAFFIC UPDATE - Fatal accident on Folly Road near Fort Johnson

Folly Road remained closed in both directions after a fatal accident about a mile from Fort Johnson Road Tuesday afternoon.

One person was killed and four others were injured in an accident on Folly Road near Fort Johnson Road, authorities said.

Folly Road was closed for four hours, starting at 4 p.m., while the Charleston County Sheriff's office investigated the accident, sheriff's Maj. John Clark said.

A Ford Explorer was traveling toward Charleston when it apparently crossed the center line of Folly Road, Clark said. The driver of a Ford F-250 that was heading toward Folly Beach and pulling an empty horse trailer tried to avoid hitting the Explorer and ended up striking the Explorer anyway, sending it onto its side. The F-250 crashed headlong into a house at 1714 Folly Road.

The Explorer flipped onto its passenger side. One person who was in the Explorer died at the scene; three others were taken by Charleston County EMS to local hospitals with life-threatening injuries, Clark said.

The driver of the F-250 was also taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, Clark said.

A woman who was in the house when it was struck by the F-250 was evaluated and cleared by paramedics, Clark said.

Traffic was detoured via Grimball, Old Military, and Battery Island roads. Folly Road was reopened about 8 p.m.
