I watched Stephen Colbert recently when he interviewed Diane Sawyer, a well-known and accomplished journalist. What struck me in their conversation was that both had been waiters at one point in their lives.

Having waited tables myself, I believe it offers an invaluable experience: meeting everyday people, providing service, exhibiting patience and kindness under multiple circumstances; and gaining invaluable insights into the human experience.

As we move forward in Charleston with providing affordable transportation, parking and, hopefully, housing for our hospitality workers, remember that your server today may be the next Diane Sawyer or Stephen Colbert.

Being considerate, chatting with them a bit and tipping appropriately would seem to benefit all.
