Judge sets bail at $50,000 for man charged in drowning case

Saquan Meekins, 22, is unlikely to get out of jail on the $50,000 surety bond set Thursday afternoon by Judge R. Markley Dennis on the charge of homicide by child abuse.

Meekins' lawyer Mark Peper said the family didn't have money for the electronic monitoring ordered by Goose Creek Municipal Judge Shirley Johnson if Meekins were to be released from jail, so Peper doubted they would have the money to post bail.

Meekins is accused of holding 10-year-old Jon Jon Jackson underwater at the deep end of an apartment complex pool in June. Jackson died about an hour later. The Berkeley County Coroner said the cause of death was asphyxiation.

Meekins' mother Christine Meekins and Jon Jon's mother Cassandra Jackson were roommates at the time of Jon Jon's death and now rent a house in Goose Creek.
