The Fort Dorchester girls basketball team stomped on the gas and made a statement in its first region game of the season.
The Lady Patriots topped visiting Ashley Ridge, 80-33, on Jan. 11 in the Region 8-AAAAA opener for both teams. The Patriots took a 40-17 lead into the half and led 62-23 going into the final quarter.
“We are playing some good basketball right now,” Fort Dorchester coach Javon Gilliard said. “I explained to the ladies that the most important games are the region games so I’m proud of them for making sure we got this win against Ashley Ridge.”
Junior Kwayasia White led the charge, draining a game-high 27 points. Junior Denver Mathis added 20 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Kai Mack chipped in 16 points and freshman Cailah Tucker finished with 10.
Fort Dorchester improved to 11-5 on the season with the win while Ashley Ridge fell to 11-6. During its two games played since returning to action after the holiday break, the team has outscored its opponents, 127-62.
Fort Dorchester travels to Goose Creek Jan. 14. The Patriots then travel to Stall Jan. 18 and host West Ashely at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 21.
Ashley Ridge travels to West Ashley on Jan. 14 and then hosts two games. The Swamp Foxes host Conway on Jan. 17 and region foe Summerville at 7 p.m. on Jan. 21.
