The Fort Dorchester Girls Soccer team won a key Region 7-AAAAA match March 23.
The Patriots battled for a 2-0 victory over visiting Ashley Ridge. Sophomore Zoey Conrad scored a goal in the first half with an assist by senior Izzy Varnado to put the Patriots ahead. With 4:50 remaining in the match, senior Kaitlyn Waterman scored the put-away goal with an assist from freshman Ambrea Hill.
“I moved Mo Snype into my stopper position early in the match because we just didn’t have the tenacity back there,” Fort Dorchester coach Taryn Floyd said. “She transformed our defense within the first 10 minutes. She brought the passion; she brought the intensity and they couldn’t get past her. She is a phenomenal player and really led our entire defense tonight from a position she hasn’t been in this season.”
Fort Dorchester improved to 7-3 on the season with a 5-1 mark in the region. Ashley Ridge dropped to 4-1 in region matches.
“AR was the only undefeated team in the region,” Fort Dorchester coach Taryn Floyd said. “They came in at 4-0 while three other teams were 3-1 so a lot of teams were hoping we would win tonight. It mixes everything up and it really is anyone’s region now.”
However, the win didn’t come easy.
“They had us panicked in the first half,” Floyd said. “Any time you play an inter-district school it is a little bit more. These girls play club together and are all friends and I have so much respect for Coach Mark Weaver. It is a big mental game and I think we came in a little panicked. AR had the upper hand in the first period, but then in the second period I don’t think they crossed our half but a couple of times. My girls came out to play in the second period.”
When the Swamp Foxes did manage an attack on goal in the second half, junior keeper Danielle Paulk made some athletic saves to secure the shutout.
Across town, the Fort Dorchester Boys soccer team earned a 1-0 victory at Ashley Ridge after besting the Swamp Foxes 3-0 during a penalty-kick shootout. Fort Dorchester improved to 6-3-0 on the season with a 4-1 mark in the region. Ashley Ridge dropped to 4-5-0 with a 3-1 mark in the region.
On March 30 the Swamp Foxes will take on Summerville with the AR Girls hosting and the boys on the road. The Fort Dorchester teams will face Stratford March 30 with the FD Girls hosting and the boys on the road.
