Body found near ditch in Ridgeville; suspect arrested

The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) has reportedly apprehended a 40-year-old male in connection to the murder of an unidentified man found near a backyard ditch on Highway 78 in Ridgeville during the late afternoon hours of Jan. 19.

The suspect, Elup Levar Jones, is being accused of committing murder "with malice," as the victim's head was found in mud and water prompting his demise, as stated in the corresponding police arrest warrant.

Upon arriving at the scene of the crime, the authorities spotted a Black male laying on the ground unresponsive in a red shirt and black pants. An EMS crew administered CPR, as the paramedics later advised that the individual had succumbed to his injuries.

The DCSO notes that the crime in question remains an active investigation. The Journal Scene will report new details on this case as they become available.

UPDATE: The Dorchester County coroner has identified the person killed in an apparent homicide in Ridgeville at 419 Highway 78 on January 19, 2023. D’Angelo Smith, 46, of Ridgeville was pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner at 7:02pm. The body will undergo an autopsy at the Medical University of South Carolina.
