NFL players donate money to elementary school teachers

Principal Rene Harris, Dora Green and Diana Ross present 20 $100 gift cards to teachers at Beech Hill Elementary.

Carlos Dunlap and AJ Green may be in Cincinnati for the upcoming NFL season, but that has not stopped them from making an impact on the Summerville community.

Dunlap and Green gave away 20 $100 Wal-mart gift cards to teachers at Beech Hill Elementary school, the school where Green attended. Their mothers Diana Ross and Dora Green presented the teachers with the gift cards at their staff meeting on August 21st.

Dunlap and Green, who both play for the Cincinnati Bengals, both went to school in Dorchester County District 2. Ross was an educator in Dorchester District 2 teaching at both Fort Dorchester and Summerville High School, before becoming a principal at Goodwin Elementary School. She said it was great to see her son help out teachers in this way.

“It felt great because I know that teachers spend their money on supplies to make sure that to make sure students have everything they need,” Ross said.

She said that it is humbling to see her son give back to the community where he grew up.

Dora Green said that it is a blessing that her son is able to give back to the community. She also said that many in the community are proud of his accomplishments.

“Everybody is so proud and I’m glad that he’s that he’s that type of person,” Green said.

Principal of Beech Hill Rene Harris said that she is happy that the teachers are getting recognition for all of their hard work.

“I’m just so excited for our teachers they work really hard and its just an honor,” Harris said. “It’s just reassuring to see someone remember them.”

Harris said that the actions of Green and Dunlap show that what they learned when they were in school far exceeds subjects like math and science. They learned to help others and remember those who helped you along the way.

Dunlap is no stranger to charity, his foundation the Carlos Dunlap Foundation takes part in several campaigns to combat bullying, encourage literacy and aid homeless children.
