COLUMBIA — The chairman of the Horry County Council is the latest Republican to announce he’s running for South Carolina’s new 7th congressional district.

Tom Rice plans to announce his candidacy in stops across the district Wednesday. His nine-city tour is scheduled to start in Georgetown and end in Conway. Other stops along the way include Myrtle Beach, Marion, Florence, Darlington, Chesterfield, Bennettsville and Dillon.

The new district was created in the northeastern corner of the state after the 2010 Census showed population gains.

Republicans who have already announced include former Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, state Rep. Thad Viers, Gary Stephens, and Mande Wilkes. Democrat Parnell Diggs is also running.
