HILTON HEAD ISLAND — Some members of the Hilton Head Island Town Council worry the main bridge on the Cross Island Parkway has become a speed trap for tourists.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports the council’s Public Safety Committee voted Monday to have the council ask the state to increase the speed limit on the Charles Frasier Bridge on U.S. 278 from 40 mph to 45 mph.
Town traffic engineer Darrin Shoemaker said some islanders feel the speed is too low and it’s a speed trap for visitors when it’s strictly enforced. Shoemaker says there have been questions about the speed limit since the parkway opened 13 years ago.
The state Transportation Department recommended increasing the speed limit in the late 1990s, but at the time council objected.
