August's high heat will once again dominate the Lowcountry's weather today, making for a great beach day -- at least until the requisite afternoon thunderstorms pop up.

The area was slammed Friday night with strong winds and heavy rain. Wind gusts upwards of 60 mph were reported in the North Charleston and Goose Creek areas. Power was reported out for many residents there through the night.

Rainfall was heavy at times overnight, with a total of about 2.5 inches reported at the airport.

The pattern will continue today. Temperature are expected to hit 90 with a heat index of 103. And more heavy rains are expected with afternoon thunderstorms.

As always, be prepared to seek shelter if you spot lightning in an approaching storm. Also, since heavy rains can result in slick roads and some area flooding, use caution on area roadways.
