The Spa at Charleston Place is hosting its sixth annual “I Will Reflect” Fashion Show and Cocktail Party to promote sun safety in the Charleston area 7-10 p.m. Thursday.

This year’s event, dubbed the SPF (Skin. Party. Fashion.) Event, features “I Will Reflect” ambassadors, skin protec-tion tips from the Medical University of South Carolina, a fashion show featuring local designers and retailers, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, and a silent auction.

A donation of $20 is suggested. Proceeds will benefit skin-cancer research at MUSC. RSVP by email to

Since the spa started on the most visible melanoma awareness campaign in the area in 2008, it has raised and donated $30,000 to the MUSC Foundation for skin cancer research through the sales of “I Will Reflect” UV-detection bracelets, special events and other donations, according to Annette Sandford-Lopez, director of the spa and health club.

“The Spa’s campaign encourages the public to pledge ‘I Will Reflect,’ and join the movement to help reduce the impact of melanoma, which is the most serious, often life-threatening form of skin-cancer.”

While the fashion show is the highlight of the spa’s efforts, it has undertaken other outreach efforts as well in recent years.

This year’s effort included getting first-graders at three local schools to compete in a contest for sun safety “superhero” using elements of the “I Will Reflect” campaign in a storyline.

A class taught by Cari James at St. Andrew’s School of Math and Science Magnet won for creating “SunnyPants Kid.”

Sandford-Lopez says she was “blown away” by all the entries, which included Belle Hall and Laurel Hill elementary schools, but that a panel of judges selected SunnyPants in March.

The superhero will be turned into a short video on sun safety.

“Teaching children to practice sun safety, such as putting on sunscreen, is just another aspect of basic health lessons, such as brushing your teeth,” says Sandford-Lopez. “We talk to them about the importance of nutrition and exercise. Sun protection is just one more element of that.”
