On April 3, the Lowcountry Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure awarded more than $668,000 to 11 nonprofit organizations.
Among the local recipients were the Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic, Hollings Cancer Center and Roper St. Francis Healthcare. Those three organizations received more than $190,000 combined.
The affiliate, led by Executive Director Taffy Tamblyn, worked with area health care professionals and community leaders to assess the specific needs of the Lowcountry community in terms of breast health. This Community Profile, a standard used by all Komen affiliates, was used to establish the grant application and review process.
Based on the profile, funding priorities for the grants included reducing screening and treatment barriers, increasing education and resources for overall breast health and screenings, and improving support for breast cancer survivors.
