Dentist collects candy for troops
Staff at Kool Smiles on Dorchester Road will be collecting Halloween candy as part of the company's sixth annual Operation Troop Treats. The candy will be sent to U.S. service members stationed overseas.
According to a press release about the event, children who donate "25 pieces of unopened candy in its original packaging at a Kool Smiles office will receive one toy. There is a limit of 3 toys per child and toys will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis."
Candy drop-offs can be made during business hours through Nov. 4 at Kool Smiles, 4400 Dorchester Road.
Report: Insurance competition shrinks
The American Medical Association published a new report showing that health insurance competition through the federal marketplace shrunk more in South Carolina than almost anywhere else between 2014 and 2016.
At one point, five health insurance companies sold Affordable Care Act policies in South Carolina through the federal exchange. Now, only one is left.
"High market concentration tends to lower competition among commercial health insurers," the American Medical Association explained in a press release about the report. "These markets become ripe for the exercise of health insurer market power, which harms patients by raising premiums above competitive levels."
