DHEC reports over 2,700 new COVID-19 cases and 40 deaths

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control reported over 2,700 new cases of COVID-19 for the week that ended March 7, and 40 new deaths.

Statewide numbers

New cases reported: 2,763

Total cases in S.C.: 1,836,568

New deaths reported: 40

Total deaths in S.C.: 19,600

Percent of ICU beds filled (with COVID-19 and other patients): 67.52 percent

Percent positive: DHEC has not updated its percent positive data for this week. 

S.C. residents vaccinated

As of March 7 in South Carolina, 62.1 percent of people who are eligible for the vaccine have received at least one dose, and 54 percent of eligible residents are considered fully vaccinated against the coronavirus.

These numbers reflect all eligible residents in South Carolina, including young children. The latest data from DHEC shows 23.6 percent of children ages 5-11 have at least one vaccine dose and 5.2 percent among those under age 5.

Hospitalizations

Of the 193 COVID-19 patients hospitalized as of March 7, 17 were in the ICU. DHEC no longer reports ventilator usage among hospital patients as of Dec. 20.

State health officials are urging all eligible residents to get vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19, wear a mask when needed and follow the latest guidance according the COVID-19 Community Level map for each county.
