SPARTANBURG— An Upstate grocer has made a key donation to keep a Spartanburg soup kitchen in operation.

Bi-Lo Charities delivered more than 800 pounds of food to the soup kitchen Monday.

The Spartanburg Soup Kitchen had considered cutting back or eliminating the lunch and after-school meals it offers children and senior citizens after losing donations from another grocer who is closing.

Food Lion is closing seven stores in the Upstate, including one that had been a major donor to the soup kitchen.

A Bi-Lo store in Spartanburg and the company’s corporate office in Mauldin are filling the gap.

Executive director Lou Landrum with the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen says the donation has restored hope.
