DETROIT — General Motors’ U.S. car and truck sales jumped 49 percent in February, aided by sweeter financing and lease deals.
The largest U.S. car company says it sold 207,000 vehicles last month as newer models continued to sell well in a slowly improving economy.
U.S. sales chief Don Johnson says GM’s sales were strong across its model lineup. He says consumers are looking at small cars but have not yet changed buying habits due to higher gas prices.
GM sweetened incentives for buyers in January and February. But Johnson says the company will back off later in the year.
Industry analysts expect overall U.S. sales to rise about 20 percent from February of last year.
GM is the first major car company to report U.S. sales on Tuesday.
