Former Carvers Bay High School standout linebacker/defensive lineman Byron Young has found his NFL home.
Young, who played for the Tennessee Volunteers for the last two seasons, was selected by the Los Angeles Rams at 77th overall in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft on April 28.
Young played in 24 games with 21 starts and logged 83 tackles, 23.5 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks and 22 quarterback hurries in his two years at Tennessee. He was invited and participated in the 2023 Reese’s Senior Bowl and was selected to the 2023 NFL Combine.
The Georgetown native started all 13 games in 2022 and led the Vols with seven sacks to go along with 12 tackles for loss and 14 quarterback hurries. His seven sacks were tied for sixth in the Southeastern Conference and his 12 TFLs were eighth in the conference. He also had 37 tackles on the year, which was tied for 10th on the team, and his 41 sack yards led the Vols.
Young capped his career off in dominant fashion, recording three tackles and a game-high two sacks for a loss of nine yards to help the Vols beat No. 7 Clemson in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 20, 2022.
For his efforts, Young was named All-SEC first team by the conference’s coaches, All-SEC second team by the Associated Press and was named the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week twice in 2022.
Prior to his career with the Vols, Young played at Georgia Military College, a junior college in Milledgeville, Ga.
