Carvers Bay football ready for 1st season in Region 5-A

HEMINGWAY — The Carvers Bay Bears finished 3-1 in Region 4-A last season and reached the second round of the A playoffs before falling to Bamberg Ehrhardt, 41-14.

This season, Carvers Bay will play in Region 5-A. The region will be similar to last year, except with the addition of Johnsonville and the subtraction of C.E. Murray, which combined with Kingstree this offseason.

Of the teams in the Bears’ region this year, East Clarendon, Scott’s Branch and Johnsonville made the playoffs last season.

Among the key players Carvers Bay lost to graduation were quarterback Kayshaun Brockington and running back Joshua Walker, who was hurt for most of the 2021 season, but the Bears also have a few key returners, including veteran wide receiver/defensive back Tony Bell and junior quarterback Kenneth Bateman.

Following the 2022 season, Carvers Bay will begin installment of new turf at Big Bear Stadium as part of Georgetown County School District’s artificial turf project.

The Bears opened the season with a 62-14 loss to Fairfield Central on Aug. 19 and will now host their three rival GCSD schools the next three weeks.
