"Beyond Barbados," an SCETV documentary explores how intricately this West Indies nation is tied to the history of South Carolina.

A new SCETV documentary premiering tonight entitled “Beyond Barbados: The Carolina Connection” suggests Barbados is overlooked as an important piece of South Carolina history as well as American history.

The documentary is part of the “Carolina Stories” series and works to trace the extensive ties between South Carolina colonization and Barbados.

“I think most South Carolinians would be surprised to learn of our state’s strong historical and cultural connection to Barbados. It completely shaped the identity and ethos of our own culture,” said Sanford Adams, Director and Producer of the documentary. “By exploring this, perhaps we can positively influence our region’s future in a global society

The documentary was supported by a grant from the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor. In conjunction with the film’s release, SCETV will host educator workshops based on the information and has developed classroom lesson plans.

“Beyond Barbados: The Carolina Connection” will premiere tonight on SCETV at 8:00 p.m. and will also be shown June 22 on ETV World at 3:00 p.m., June 23 on SCETV at 7:00 p.m. and June 24 on the S.C. Channel at 8:00 p.m.
