Chef Danny Smith won the Myrtle Beach Area Hospitality Association’s “Chef of the Year” award on Friday, Nov 15. Originally from Watertown, New York, Smith has been in the culinary industry for over 30 years. When he moved to Murrells Inlet, he began working at Frank’s Outback for the past nine years. Chef Smith, a culinary autodidact, is the two time winner of SC Seafood Chef of the Year for 2014 and 2019. After gaining such recognition, Smith says that this ceremony and being awarded was an huge honor to him.
“To get awarded like that in front of all your peers is something special” Smith said.
The MBAHA held this award ceremony at to honor culinarians who have demonstrated the highest standard of culinary skills and dedication to advancing the culinary industry along the Grand Strand.
Smith has also competed in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Nevada, Florida and New Orleans where he represented SC at the Great American seafood cook-off. Afterwards, Smith participated in the World Food Championship in Dallas, Texas in October working alongside sous chef Charles Bardo from R’Way Pizza and Family Tavern.
Smith is involved in numerous charity work for events such as the Friendship Place in Georgetown, helping those and Champion Autism Network, promoting autism awareness. Smith also spends time with prospects students looking to have a future in the culinary business. Smith is launching”All About You”, his own chef personal and looks forward to future competitions and doing what he does best, cooking.
“I just continue to do what I do every day and at the end of the year we’ll see what I come up with” Smith said.
