Cornhole

If there’s one game that you can play with a beer in one hand, it’s cornhole. The drinking sport has exploded in popularity over the last decade or so, and if you think you’ve got what it takes to be a cornhole champion, you should enter yourself and a partner in this Saturday’s 11th Civitan Cornhole Classic at Schooners Bar and Grill on Bush River Road.

This charity cornhole tournament benefits the SC Autism Society and Civitan Research Center. Registration and warm-up begins at 12:30 p.m., and round robin play begins at 1 p.m. Entry is $25 per player with cash prizes going to the champion team and door prizes for everyone. There is no-skunk scoring, which doesn’t mean a thing to me, but according to people in the know means that players of any skill level can have a good time playing. You can register your team and check out the rules at civitancornholeclassic.org.

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

This Sunday is Cinco De Mayo, and of course, any and every bar in town is doing something for the day. Here are a few of our favorites. Swing by Curiosity Coffee Bar for Cinco de Mayo with Los Chicanos from 3 to 8 p.m. for some terrific Mexican food from Los Chicanos Food Truck and a very nice selection of Mexican beers. Both Cantina 76 locationas will be offering $2.50 Coronas and $5 Cazadores Classic margaritas at Main Street and half-off margaritas and margarita pitchers at the Devine Street location. Jake’s on Devine will be hosting their 5th Annual Margarita Challenge from 1 to 6 p.m. with bartenders from different local restaurants competing for the title of “Best Margarita.” Margaritas are only $5 during the event. It’s free but there is a $5 suggested donation, proceeds of which benefit the Columbia Chapter of the United States Bartenders Guild and the Human Society of Columbia. If you’re done with Mexican food for this holiday, swing by The Whig for their regular first Sunday of the month offering of Chicken and Waffles and bubbly and Bloody Marys.

River Rat Raises Money for Serve and Connect

If you’re looking for something to do every Tuesday this month, consider heading over to River Rat from 6 to 9 p.m. each Tuesday in May for the Serve and Connect Fundraiser. One dollar from each purchase during this time will go towards Serve and Connect, the local organization committed to bringing communities and law enforcement together to address issues of community safety. This week, Chris Compton will be out providing live music for the night, and Tuesdays are indeed Taco Tuesdays at River Rat, so that means $2 mini-tacos all night.
