The long-awaited opening of Home Team BBQ is set for Monday, May 13 — at 11 a.m., for those who want to be first in line.
The Charleston-based barbecue operation announced a year ago that it would take over the former Harper’s location in Five Points after a contentious battle over a proposal to make the site a Zaxby’s, which many residents and merchants opposed.
Home Team will have brunch, lunch, dinner and late night snacks. For those familiar with their other locations throughout Charleston (and oddly enough, Aspen, Colorado), the menu features barbecue with five types of sauce to choose from; salads, tacos, burgers, smoked chicken wings, and a wide variety of sides. The restaurant has been featured in numerous national publications and on Food Network and the Cooking Channel.
The upfitted structure gives a nod to Harper’s, which inhabited the space for 27 years before closing quickly in April 2017 due to mounting repairs that needed to be done to the building. The Blue Sky mural on the side of the building will remain, and some of the ceiling beams from Harper’s were able to be repurposed into Home Team’s bar top and other accent pieces throughout the space. An almost unbelievable 70 parking spaces will be marked for the restaurant’s patrons as well.
Home Team BBQ is located at 700 Harden Street and will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. seven days a week.
