For the last few years, many craft brewers have been using hop varieties that impart flavors reminiscent of tropical fruits to their India pale ales (IPAs). These have produced some delicious beers that have led the trend toward more hop flavor and less bitterness in IPAs. But craft brewers are never content with standing still, so now some are adding real fruit to add further depth of flavor.

Stone’s Tangerine Express IPA is one of these beers, with tangerine and pineapple puree added during the brewing process. This beer has a base of rich, pale malt, expertly balanced by hop bitterness that carries well into the finish. The tangerine and pineapple flavors give this IPA a luscious aroma that carries into the flavor. The tangerine and pineapple flavors are expertly layered so that each is present at mid-taste. These natural fruit flavors blend beautifully with the citrus and other complex flavors from this IPA’s hop cocktail. This is an extravagant beer. Cheers!
