Punch Tap Margarita at River Rat

what: Punch Tap Margarita

where: River Rat Brewery

cost: $7

As mentioned in the On Tap column this week, Cinco de Mayo is this Saturday, and just about every bar in town will have some kind of margarita special. But have you ever thought about heading to a brewery for a margarita? Well, now you can, as River Rat Brewery has become the first brewery in town to take advantage of recent changes to brewery and brewpub laws in order to serve liquor by the glass.

“We are strong on beer always, but want to be a bit more and have something for everyone,” says River Rat founder Mike Tourville. “So ‘punch tap’ is here at River Rat Brewery.”

The brewery plans to feature two cocktails on tap at a time, one at their main bar and one at their new rooftop bar. The current selections include a boozy little rum number dubbed the Hemingway Daiquiri, and the Tequila Punch Margarita.

The drink itself is a refreshing and sweet take on the classic margarita, and at a full 16-ounce pint glass for $7, a steal in the world of cocktails. The cocktails are the conception of River Rat brewer Eddie Newman who used to bartend at Speakeasy in Five Points, so he knows his way around a shaker.

Tourville has high hopes for the future of the cocktail program at River Rat.

“Sometimes you may just want a nice mai tai or any other fruit driven cocktail – mint juleps with the Kentucky Derby or a Jameson cocktail for St. Pats’ Day.” Or hey, a margarita for Cinco de Mayo at a brewery.
