Birdsong Brewing’s Hazy Sexy Cool IPA (6.8 percent ABV, $4.29 for a pint at Greens)

A gose is a sour beer — but the downside of goses, as compared to other sour beers, is that they are often one dimensional. By this I mean the beers of this style typically have little flavor, only a touch of grain. Their principal attraction is the tactile impression of sourness and astringency that makes them remarkably refreshing and bracing. Lenny Boy Brewing adds passion fruit to its fine gose, providing a delicious flavor component that complements and balances the beer’s tart sour notes. This is a low alcohol refresher with enough complexity to keep it appealing.

Birdsong Brewing’s Hazy Sexy Cool IPA is a tasty example of the New England IPA style. The hop cocktail features hops that create the complex tropical notes of citrus, mango, tangerine and stone fruit that are characteristics of the style. This one has some pine notes from the hops, giving structure to the tropical flavor profile. The balance is exceptional — not bitter and not sweet. Low carbonation and lack of bitterness make this one dangerously drinkable.
