Brooklyn Brewing is a successful Northeastern craft brewer with an excellent portfolio of ales and lagers. The brewery’s longtime brewmaster is Garrett Oliver, the author of The Brewmaster’s Table and editor of The Oxford Companion to Beer. He is a knowledgeable and skillful brewer, and it shows in his beers, which are usually enhancements of European classic styles.

Winter Lager is an excellent interpretation of the German schwarzbier style (black beer.) This dark beer’s aroma is dark chocolate and espresso, and these are the major components of its flavor profile as well, with a slight impression of dark bread. There is a hint of sweetness at mid-taste that is pleasantly balanced by bitterness from the highly roasted malts. Winter Lager features the unmistakable smoothness of a lager and is a very satisfying and soothing brew on a chilly evening.

By the way, this is first beer that I have noticed with the seal of the Brewers Association, certifying that it is made by an independent craft brewer. Cheers! — Gerald Jowers
