Shrimp Burger at Rosewood Market

what: Shrimp Burger

cost: $11.95

where: Rosewood Market & Deli, 2803 Rosewood Dr., 803-256-6410

For a long time after moving to the South, the combination of the words “shrimp” and “burger” made me skeptical. Sure, there are crab cakes, which make great sandwiches, but something about the idea of a shrimp burger didn’t do it for me.

The shrimp burger at Rosewood Market, though, shattered any reservations I had. Not at all full of bread filler like some other shrimp burgers I’ve had since, this meaty burger is packed with fresh chunks of shrimp. The patty itself has a nice crust and a soft, slightly sweet interior. My most recent shrimp burger came with a horseradish sauce that provided a pleasing kick to round out the sandwich.

Rosewood’s shrimp burger may deserve to be on the list of iconic Columbia foods, being a longtime favorite of the nearly 30-year-old establishment. Originally a weekly special, the shrimp burger is now available daily in the Rosewood Market deli. (This photo was taken during last weekend’s Rosewood Crawfish Festival.) Wash it down with a refreshing glass of kombucha to cool off during these increasingly hot days in The Wood.

Rosewood Market’s deli is open Monday through Saturday from 8 to 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (The market is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.)
