what: Santa Fe Burger
where: Burger Tavern 77, 2631 Devine St.
If you’re the indecisive type, the build-your-own burger checklist at Burger Tavern 77 can be as daunting to fill out as a March Madness bracket — there are so many tantalizing topping match-ups to ponder. Tired of pulling your hair out while going back and forth on whether the final sauce salvo to make your creation sing will be the apple-cran aioli or that zesty horseradish mayo? If you don’t trust your own burger design instincts, take a peek at the carefully curated burger menu and one will certainly call out your name.
As I was hankering for the flavors of the Southwest, this juicy Santa Fe burger hollered. The eight-ounce patty is topped with melted pepper jack, fried jalapeños and guacamole and rounded out with the typical lettuce, tomato, and onion fixing-trifecta. (The only thing really missing is the green chile, and you’d have a legit New Mexico style cheeseburger.) Eschewing fries or onion rings for fresh greens (a $2.49 upcharge) is a decision your stomach won’t regret. I opted for Burger Tavern 77’s vaunted PGS salad. The acronym stands for pistachios, goat cheese and strawberries, and it tastes like a picnic in California’s San Joaquin Valley.
The tavern slings burgers Monday through Thursday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. On Friday and Saturday they’re open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
