what: breakfast burger with kale slaw side
where: Hampton St. Diner, 1840 Hampton St.
Danny & the Juniors’ “At the Hop” is pumping on the stereo as I settle down in a comfy red booth and scan the menu. While the actual decade is long before my time, this retro 1950s burger and shake joint does take me back to 90210’s Peach Pit with its chrome-trimmed stools and sassy waitstaff sporting spiffy red bowties. And like that fictional diner’s mega burgers, Hampton St. also has a penchant for stacking ’em as high as Steve Sanders’ billfold.
The massive breakfast burger is pure morning glory. A plump and juicy hand-pressed patty sits pretty between a pile of shredded hash browns, bacon and a fried egg crowned with caramelized onions. Fitting it all in my jaws would have necessitated chucking the top slice of Texas toast.
“To quote a scene from my favorite movie, Madagascar... I like ‘em big, I like ‘em chunky!” explains owner Christina Suvarna. “I just make burgers that make you want to eat them.”
Keen on complementing this bad boy with a cool sippable treat? Along with the usual milkshake flavor suspects, they’ve also got Almond Joy, Birthday Cake and Banana Pudding. Hampton St. Diner is open Monday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Sundays for brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Mike Dojc
