The Midlands is about to see its first of the Famous Toastery franchises open, with one going on Main Street next to Cantina 76, and one on Sparkleberry Road in Northeast Columbia across from Spring Valley High School. The Northeast location is slated to open in early December, and the Main Street location is aiming for a late spring start.

The Davidson, North Carolina-based company is famous for more than its toast — it's a breakfast-brunch eatery that is open from early morning through late lunch. The menu will cover everything from toast to pancakes to salads and cheeseburgers, and every menu item is available at any time of day.

Local proprietors Kim Kenney and her husband decided to bring Famous Toastery to town after they realized that there was a need for a breakfast-brunch place.

“A friend of ours opened one of the first franchises in Cary, North Carolina, and talked to us about it,” says Kenney. “After doing our research we found that Famous Toastery was a top franchise for 2016.”

Famous Toastery was originally slated to go into the Moe Levy's building on Assembly Street, which is being renovated by The Arnold Companies, but Kenney decided the space needed too much upfit. The new planned location is at 1301 Main St.

Kenney and her family have been in Columbia for over 21 years and feel very rooted in the community, she says.

“Even though this is a franchise we want it to feel like a hometown, local business.” The Kenneys also plan to open locations in Lexington and Irmo eventually as well.
