If you’re looking for the best barbecue in the great state of South Carolina — and who isn’t? — you’re in luck. The website destination-bbq.com is a blog and searchable database started by Jim and Heather Roller of Mount Pleasant to chronicle their adventures in their quest to find really good barbecue.

Part of the website is the SC BBQ locator map, which currently lists 227 barbecue joints from way down near Beaufort to up toward Traveler’s Rest. On the blog side, the Rollers have reviews of about one-tenth of the restaurants they know of in South Carolina, not including any that they’d tried prior to starting the blog, Jim notes.

The Rollers started the website as a simple blog in the summer of 2012 as a way to enjoy some time and dinners together as a family, but they decided recently to take it to the next level. Now, they're aiming to make destination-bbq.com the authority on Palmetto State 'cue, and are training to become certified judges through the South Carolina Barbecue Association.

“This is an ongoing process, and the locator map is one step in that process,” Jim Rollers says.

The map and blog will stay focused on South Carolina barbecue only. Though they are open to all kinds of sauces, the Rollers prefer vinegar-pepper based sauces.

“I was raised in Cheraw and one of my earliest epiphanies was tasting the barbecue served for the Methodist Church fundraiser, sneaking bites out of a big serving tray,” Roller says. “It was one of those 'Wow' moments that you never forget, and the best barbecue takes me back to that moment.”
