SPARTANBURG — A former Union County sheriff is one of several officials from the scandal-ridden county waiting to find out his sentence.

Former Sheriff Howard Wells is scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday in Spartanburg along with several other ex-county officials.

The former mayor and zoning administrator in the town of Union have served prison time for bribes.

Wells pleaded guilty to lying to agents about money he loaned in exchange for interest he didn’t report as taxable income. He faces up to five years in prison.

Wells was propelled into the national spotlight in 1994 when Susan Smith confessed to him she had strapped her young sons into their car seats and let the car roll into a lake. Smith originally said the boys were taken in a carjacking.
