Former Beaufort County clerk of court Elizabeth Mason Smith was sentenced this morning to six months of home confinement for taking $68,500 from child support enforcement accounts.
Smith, 48, pleaded guilty to conversion of public money in April. In addition to the home confinement, she will spend two years on supervised release.
She faced a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for her crime.
U.S. District Court Judge Sol Blatt Jr. did not order Smith to pay restitution because she already returned the money she took. Smith worked as clerk of court from 2000 until she resigned amidst the investigation in July of 2009.
