The two essential components of a great food culture, according to writer Adam Gopnik, are wine and coffee: The former allows diners’ minds to wander, while the latter snaps them back to reality.

Twisted Cypress Brewing Co. in West Ashley offers both caffeine and booze, although in this case, the coffee comes first. Its new Sam Rittenberg location, which formerly housed a Loyal Order of Moose chapter, functions six days a week as a coffeehouse from 7:30 a.m.-noon. “We are a true coffee bar!,” the brewery’s website declares. The taproom keeps a Thursday-Sunday schedule.

Although the café and taproom’s operating hours don’t overlap, the same beans that are roasted for coffee in the morning figure into Twisted Cypress’ coffee porter.

Coffee is poured at Twisted Cypress, 1897 Sam Rittenberg Blvd., every day but Sunday. The taproom is open Thursdays, 4-10 p.m.; Fridays, 4 p.m.-midnight; Saturdays, noon-midnight and Sundays, noon-5 p.m. For more information, call 843-608-1899, or visit
