Now open A peek at the newest food or drink venue Welkin Coffee

Grace Beahm/Staff Customers order off the mirrored menu at Welkin Coffee on South Market Street.

It’s not uncommon for a cafe to serve beer, wine, coffee and tea, but Welkin Coffee is assertive about jumbling together the disparate drinks.

The menu at the new French Quarter shop includes the Welkin mimosa, topped with housemade hibiscus-and-berry tea, and the Upper/Downer, a 10-ounce beer accompanied by an espresso shot. (Welkin doesn’t combine the two in one glass, but once you’ve purchased the $5 special, you can do with the beverages what you wish.)

Prior to opening Welkin, owner Derrick Smith was Counter Culture Coffee’s South Carolina equipment technician. He first moved to Charleston six years ago to help his friend run Kudu.

“Along with our spacious interior, we have plenty of patio seating for guests to enjoy their Welkin beverages and sweet treats,” Smith promises, alluding to the ice cream and pastries from Brown’s Court Bakery.

Welkin Coffee, 51 S. Market St., is open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. daily. For more information, visit welkincoffee.com. No phone.
