New Moon rises up as The Loophole

Look for The Loophole at the site of New Moon Pizzeria and Pub.

No, no, friends told Paul “Snappy” Farrell when he disclosed plans to remake the menu at New Moon Pizzeria & Pub. How can you serve pizza and sushi in the same restaurant?

“I said, ‘there’s a loophole’,” recalls Farrell, who took the Johns Island restaurant’s new name from the repeated exchange.

The Loophole next week officially replaces New Moon, which Farrell five years ago opened with a partner. He’s now the sole owner, and excited to introduce a new chef; new drinks list and a new deck he built for live music.

“We’re rebranding,” Farrell says. “Johns Island is starting to explode, and we wanted to do something different.”

Farrell was keen to add sushi to the menu, since the area’s been hard up for rolls since JPaulz closed its Maybank Highway location in 2014. But chef Thomas Novosel, a recent arrival from Pennsylvania, is also devising dishes featuring local produce.

Pizza will remain a mainstay, Farrell says, adding that he’s launching delivery service – another Johns Island rarity.

“The regulars are all about it,” Farrell says of the changes.

Located at 2817 Maybank Hwy., The Loophole is open daily. For more information, call 789-3803 or visit theloopholeji.com.
