An 8-year-old from Hilton Head Island, identified as Mallory R., is one of 10 finalists in the "Jif Most Creative Peanut Butter Sandwich Contest." At stake are major bucks for education.
Jif is inviting peanut butter fans 13 and older to check out the recipes in English or Spanish and vote for their favorite at www.jif.com or www.jifenespanol.com. Voting will remain open through Feb. 1.
Mallory's entry, P-Nutty BBQ Chicken Quesadilla, featured ingredients such as natural peanut butter, brown sugar, hickory barbecue sauce and oven-roasted chicken.
The finalists' creations, all from children younger then 11, feature surprising ingredients, including naan bread, guava paste, lime juice and chili sauce. Recipe names also showed pizazz, such as Blue Monkey Breakfast Pita and Crazy Crunchy Kabob Sandwich.
The five entrants with the highest combined scores from the initial judging round and the online vote will advance to a live judging event in March in New York City. The grand-prize winner will receive a $25,000 college fund and $10,000 to purchase educational products. Four runners-up each will receive a $2,500 college fund.
