Q: I am going with a group of women to the North Charleston Performing Arts Center, and wanted to try Butter Tapas, but I noticed it closed. Seemed like such a great place. Is there anything you would recommend near the Center?
A: It’s really sad that April Robinson had to close Butter: North Charleston wasn’t ready for it, she says. It’ll be interesting to see what Johnson & Wales-trained chef Brian Washington does at his new Southern Twist on Dorchester Road. We’ll have pictures from the restaurant in next week’s Now Open column.
Closest to the Performing Arts Center, I love the food at Istanbul Shish Kabob, but there aren’t any drinks there, for obvious reasons. Also on the casual front, but equally delicious, is Thai Palm, which serves the best Thai food in the Charleston area: Try the whole fish.
Beyond that, in the immediate vicinity, I fear your only option for wine and small plates — which I suspect is what you and your friends were seeking at Butter — is Bonefish Grill. But if you can’t stand a chain, you could sidle over to Park Circle and have a fantastic time at Stems and Skins. Enjoy the show!
