What’s that? “I spent a lot of time traveling in the Caribbean, and a little time in Southeast Asia, and am just trying to bring that back to Charleston,” Chico Feo owner Hank Weed says of his five-year-old taco-forward hangout on Folly. Asian influences are now showing up on the menu in the form of Vietnamese sandwiches and stews.
Still, the restaurant hasn’t surrendered its distinctive Caribbean vibe. “We’re known for our curry goat,” Weed says. “People like the shock of it, I guess.”
Who recommends it? Andy McLeod, chef at The Lot.
Why? Much like The Lot, Chico Feo regularly features live music (although at The Lot, the performance space is officially next door at The Pour House.) McLeod credits that habit with contributing to the restaurant’s “kinetic energy.”
“Hank has created a cult following centered around his worldly dishes and personality,” he adds. “Hank, along with his friends and family, has built each part of Chico Feo, tweaking and expanding constantly since opening.”
Where is it? Chico Feo, located at 122 E. Ashley Ave. on Folly Beach, is open daily from noon-2 p.m. For more information, call 843-906-2710, or visit chicofeos.com.
