Daily digest What one local ate over the course of a day

The first thing I do when I wake up is drink a pint of water. I ran an easy four miles around Colonial Lake and the Battery. I have to get my workouts in before work or they're not happening.

After that, I had a local peach and made old-fashioned oats and mixed in flax seeds, a banana and South Carolina honey. Breakfast is usually oatmeal or a smoothie with fruit, peanut butter and flax seed. If I'm really motivated, I'll scramble eggs with peppers and pair with toast.

When I moved here in July, I made a deal with myself to enjoy the quiet of morning. After eating, I relax and read The New York Times online with a cup or two of coffee. I am currently trying Charleston Coffee Roasters' Charleston Organic roast. ... I'm really into Counter Culture's blends and Brooklyn Roasting Company was my go-to for a while. After coffee, I take my time biking the three miles to the office.

Almonds or peanuts are in my top desk drawer at all times. It's my late morning snack. I actually cruised through to lunch today since I was at the Lowcountry Local First GOOD Business Summit.

Lunch was catered by Verde and I opted for watermelon, feta and mint salad and a vegan wrap. I'm very lunch-time frugal so it was a nice upgrade from my usual PB & J and a piece of fruit.

For dinner, I whipped up kale-and-sunflower seed pesto. I put it over whole wheat rotini and topped it with a few seared sea scallops. A good friend taught me a few simple dishes and I am finally enjoying the process of cooking. It's very rewarding to create and enjoy a meal knowing the ingredients and their origin.

After doing the dishes, I like to have a craft beer - I'm really into the session IPAs right now - or a glass of wine. Tonight was a glass of Bench Pinot Noir from Sonoma Coast. I'm partial to the Willamette Valley, but Sonoma Coast produces great stuff too.
