With a name like The Gin Joint, a bar ought to have Holland-style gin on hand. But years ago, the juniper-forward spirit wasn’t easily sourced in South Carolina, so owner Joe Raya came up with this recipe to mimic its flavors. “It's a boozy and unique approach to a stirred cocktail, and a good example of The Gin Joint,” wife MariElena Raya says.

Although the Rayas have specified their favorite brands for this bittered Holland sling, feel free to make reasonable substitutions as needed; the rum listed here, for example, retails for about $50, which makes for a costly one-half ounce garnish if you don’t already own a bottle.
