--Join the Charleston chapter of Les Dames d'Escoffier and cooking enthusiasts at the Terrace Theatre on James Island at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 17 for a special screening of the "Julie & Julia" movie. Guests are invited to celebrate Julia Child's birthday this month with a selection of cakes (Child's recipes) and beverages.

The event is a fundraiser for Crisis Ministries' Family Center and the Culinary Scholarship Fund of Les Dames, an international philanthropic society of professional women in food, fine beverages and hospitality.

Tickets are $12; limited to 200 people. Reserve a seat with prepayment by Aug. 13 by making out a check to Les Dames d'Escoffier and mailing it to LDEI, 100 Queen St., Charleston, SC 29401. Include a phone number and e-mail for confirmation. Remaining tickets also will be available for purchase at the door the night of the event. The Terrace Theatre is at 1956 Maybank Highway.

--Chef Michelle Weaver of Charleston Grill is celebrating Child's birthday (Aug. 15) by re-creating favorite recipes from Julia's classic book, "Mastering the Art of French Cooking." A four-course tasting menu is offered throughout August for $49. Call 577-4522.

--The Glass Onion restaurant,1219 Savannah Highway, will celebrate Child's birthday by offering a three-course, prix-fixe "Julia" menu in addition to its regular dinner fare. The cost is $35; Duval Leroy Champagne available at $50 per bottle.
