SUMTER - The Pinewood Prep girls' basketball team upset No. 1 seed Heathwood Hall 54-35 tonight in a Class AAA state semifinal at the Sumter Civic Center.

The defending state champion Panthers will play Northwood Academy at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the state championship game.

The Highlanders owned victories over Pinewood and Northwood during the regular season, but a seven-minute, 56-second scoring drought and only a combined 16 points in the second and third quarters doomed the team. It marked the third straight year the Highlanders lost in the semifinals.

Pinewood topped them last year, too.

Pinewood upped its record to 20-6. Heathwood Hall had its 16-game winning streak halted and finished with a 22-2 record.
