MONCKS CORNER — Fire this morning destroyed a Berkeley County home belonging to a retired Charleston Fire department captain, authorities said.
The fire happened about 8:40 a.m. at 230 Linden Street, just off U.S. 17A near Moncks Corner.
Volunteers with the Carolina Lowcountry Chapter of the American Red Cross are assisting the two adults and two children who live at the house, according to Nancy Olson, marketing and communications manager.
The homeowner was a retired captain with the Charleston fire department, according to Mark Ruppel, public information officer for the department.
The Red Cross provided temporary shelter and comfort kits filled with emergency supplies, toys for the children and financial assistance, Olson said.
The agency has helped 777 residential fire victims since January 1.
