EUTAWVILLE -- A man shot a woman to death outside a Eutawville convenience store, drove home, kissed his mother goodbye and then killed himself Saturday night, Orangeburg County authorities said Sunday.
It was the second apparent murder-suicide in the Lowcountry this month.
Eutawville is a small rural community near Lake Marion, northwest of Moncks Corner. The latest tragedy started at Strick's One Stop on Old Number Six Highway.
An employee heard a single gunshot outside the store about 6:20 p.m. Saturday and saw a woman fall to ground, according to Sheriff Leroy Ravenell. Coroner Samuetta Marshall identified the victim as Anngenette Shaw, 42.
Ten minutes later, deputies were called to a house on Oilers Drive about a mile and a half from the store. A man had shot himself to death.
Officials said they believe he was the man who shot the woman at the convenience store, according to Ravenell.
The coroner identified him as Kenneth Burch, 53.
After fatally wounding Shaw, Burch drove home, walked to his mother's house next door, kissed her, went back into his house and shot himself, according to the sheriff.
Both victims died of gunshot wounds, Marshall said. An autopsy was being conducted Sunday.
The sheriff's office continues to investigate but didn't release any more information Sunday.
Shaw was from St. Stephen and had a daughter in Moncks Corner, according a notice from Henryhand Funeral Home, which is handling the arrangements.
Officials continue to investigate another high-profile murder-suicide in Mount Pleasant earlier this month. David Hedrick killed Dara Watson, burned her vehicle and buried her body in the Francis Marion National Forest, then shot himself to death a few days later, according to information officials have pieced together.
