Outdoor films for the entire family

With summer winding down to a close, I want to spend some time with my son before the craziness of school begins once again. We love to go to movies but can’t always afford the more expensive nightly prices.

There are some great family-friendly outdoor movies coming up this month that are free to attend. I encourage you to bring a blanket or chairs.

Outdoor Film Fest is Wednesdays at Cinebarre, 963 Houston Northcutt Blvd. in Mount Pleasant. Seating starts at 7 p.m., movies start at dark. “The Lost Boys” will play Aug. 1 and “Across the Universe” Aug. 8. Questions? Visit cinebarre.com or call 884-7885.

Shark Week Movie on the Lawn is 7-10 p.m. Thursday at the South Carolina Aquarium, 100 Aquarium Wharf downtown. See “Jaws” on the big screen with the sound of the ocean just beyond your seat. Lawn opens at 7 p.m. with the movie beginning at dark. Before the movie starts, interact with roving educators and watch an aquarium-made short film on shark myths. Questions? Call 720-1990 or visit scaquarium.org.

Movies at the Mount Pleasant Pier takes place Aug. 24 on the Great Lawn at Mount Pleasant’s Memorial Waterfront Park. “How to Train Your Dragon” starts at twilight (or around 9 p.m.). Parking is free. Questions? Call 795-4386 or email customerservice@ccprc.com.

Starlight Cinema at Freshfields Village, on Johns Island between Kiawah and Seabrook islands, is gearing up for the PGA tour with a couple of kid-friendly golf events this month. Parental guidance suggested. “Tin Cup” will play Aug. 7 and “Legend of Bagger Vance” will play Aug. 8. Both movies start at 8:30 p.m. Before the movies, First Tee of Greater Charleston will host golf games for kids starting at 7 p.m.

Also, every Wednesday Starlight Cinema offers kid-appropriate movies. This Wednesday, catch “How to Train Your Dragon.” The schedule for the rest of the month includes “Zoo Keeper” (Aug. 15), “Rango” (Aug. 22) and “Dolphin Tale” (Aug. 29). On Aug. 1 and 15, songwriter Clay Rice will perform before the movies at 7:30 p.m.
